Anita’s
family believes that she comes by her talent naturally. Her paternal
grandmother, Nelly Belle Hall, was offered a scholarship to a prestigious
Midwest music school, but was unable to attend because of her responsibilities
to the family. Anita’s mother further influenced her foundation
in music by frequently playing a broad range of jazz and broadway
tunes in their household as Anita was growing up. As a little girl
it was also a ritual for Anita to join her father and grandfather
watching conductor Arthur
Fiedler and the Boston Pops on PBS. Anita would
stand on the coffee table in the family room and her dad would conduct
her as she sang.
One
of Anita’s earliest mentors, legendary band director Clyde
Pound, took Anita under his wing and exposed
her to a wide variety of the jazz standards. This broad collection
of styles directly influences Anita’s standard repertoire
today.
